About ArVirInd

ArVirInd is a knowledge-base of Arbo-Viral proteins from India and its neighbourhood. This is a annotated database, which acts as a repository of Protein sequences for arbo-viruses along with antigenic information. Users can search for protein sequences by virus / protein name or by country of origin (India and countries of the Indian subcontinent: Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, SriLanka, Pakistan) and year of collection (that is, the year of outbreak which defines the origin of the strain). This is a unique feature of ArVirInd.

The sequences already published in various databases were obtained and subjected to in-silico antigenic characterization using advanced Bioinformatics tools. Data mining was performed to trace the year of outbreak associated with the strain for each entry. For each sequence this database provides the following information: Amino acid sequence in FASTA format, country and year of origin, predicted antigenic properties, N-glycosylation sites, etc. ArVirInd is a repository of information dedicated exclusively for India and neighbouring countries.

To begin with, the following viruses are covered: Dengue viruses (all serotypes), Japanese encephalitis and West Nile. Work on other viruses relevant to the Indian subcontinent (Chikungunya, Chandipura, etc) is under progress.

For submission of sequence data to the database please visit the "Submit Sequence" section. Compilation of ArVirInd is an initiative by ICMR-National Institute of Virology, Pune.

About NIV

National Institute of Virology is one of the premier Institutes of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). It was established at Pune, Maharashtra State in 1952 as Virus Research Centre (VRC) under the auspices of the ICMR and the Rockefeller Foundation (RF), USA. It was an outcome of the global programme of the RF for investigating the Arthropod Borne viruses. Since the studies on arboviruses and their arthropod vectors involve most of the basic principles and techniques of general virology, entomology and zoology, these viruses were also considered to be an ideal group, to begin with, for intensive training and research in virology in our country. The RF withdrew its support in 1967 and since then the Institute is entirely funded by the ICMR. In 1978 the institute was renamed as the National Institute of Virology.

Apart from providing support to Government of India and state governments during viral epidemics, the institute conducts year round research in High and Low pathogenic viruses including Kyasanur Forest Disease, Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever, Dengue, Chikungunya, Influenza and respiratory viruses, Avian Influenza, Hepatitis viruses, Japanese Encephalitis, Chandipura, West Nile, Measles and Enteric viruses. Advanced research also includes Clinical virology and Epidemiology, Medical entomology, Biochemistry, Biophysics & Electron microscopy, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics and Mathematical biology (disease modeling) applications to virology.
